Zombies are resurrected human corpses that were first mentioned by Ms. Bitters in “A Room with a Moose” and first officially appeared in "FBI Warning of Doom". Sergeant Slab Rankle created an army of them from the rule-breakers he captured over the years, presumably via the "new zombie lab" that had recently been set up in the back of the mall.
Rankle ultimately unleashed this zombie army as a last-resort effort to stop Zim from returning GIR's movie rental, Intestines of War, to the Video Outhouse. Though they were sent out in large numbers, they were literally brainless, and did little more than shamble around, their feeble attempts to apprehend Zim hardly hindering him from reaching the video deposit slot.
As far as appearances go, Rankle's zombies are not as gruesome as zombies in other media, but some have an eye missing, implying that they're "recently deceased."
In “Halloween Spectacular of Spooky Doom”, Zim mistakenly believed his classmates were turning into “Candy-starved zombies”, obviously unaware of the concept of “trick or treating” at the time.
In “Backseat Drivers From Beyond The Stars”, Professor Membrane said that Dib raised the dead and never lets his son forget that, no matter how many times he apologizes for the incident. It’s not stated, however, how Dib achieved this let alone if they were sentient or mindless zombies. As such, we do not know how they compare to Rankle's zombies.
Facts of Doom[]
- Some zombies that were seen in their debut episode are wearing the same uniform as Slab Rankle, suggesting that they used to be security guards, but whether they were fired or more disturbingly kidnapped by their former boss is not known.
- In the episode “A Room with a Moose”, Ms. Bitters is at one point giving a history lesson and implies that at an unknown point in the past there were isolated groups of Zombies that feasted upon human flesh. This seems to suggest that humanity endured a Zombie epidemic at some point in human history, which makes it clear that Zombies are fact, not fiction in the Invader Zim universe.
- In "Backseat Drivers From Beyond the Stars", Professor Membrane has a deep hatred for the fact that Dib raised the dead, he also comments that his son has a fascination with the dead, but he most likely has contempt for the fact that Dib surely tried to use some paranormal means to being Zombies to life which contrast with his view on “real science”. However, this isn’t stated in the show.
- Zim is aware of the existence of Zombies, which could either mean that he has gotten familiar with human pop culture or that other alien races across the universe had their own history with the undead.
