Invader Zim is an ongoing American comic book series created by Jhonen Vasquez. It is a continuation of the animated television series of the same name that originally aired on Nickelodeon. Publication officially began in July 2015.

Announcement[]

On February 13th, 2015, Oni Press, an American independent comic book publisher, posted an image to their Tumblr and Twitter with the cryptic message "Doom is Coming", followed by the message "Stay tuned for more — 2/20/15".[1] It was in the familiar font and was reblogged by Jhonen Vasquez himself.

It was announced on February 20th, 2015 that OniPress had decided to partner with Nickelodeon and original creator Jhonen Vasquez to bring Zim back to life in the form of a comic book series, "arriving this July (1st)".[2]

"I'm always confused when people say how much they miss Invader Zim because the show never stopped running in my head, and then I remember everyone else isn't in my head", Jhonen Vasquez is quoted in Oni's press release announcing the series. "I try to imagine the world for all those people who don't know what Zim's been up to since the show went off the air and it makes me shudder. How can people live that way? Hopefully this comic helps make the world a better place". [3]

On February 11, 2020, it was announced that the monthly released comic series would end with the release of Issue 50 in March, and replaced with a new series, Invader Zim Quarterly, which would be released quarterly starting in April.[4] However, this was postponed to June instead, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

On April 5, 2021, it was announced that the Invader Zim comic series would end completely with the publication of a special oneshot issue in August of that year.[5]

Crew[]

So far, the confirmed crew working on the comic are as follows:

  • Jhonen Vasquez: Writing, consulting. He has scripted issues 1, 2 and 20, and plans on working on more in the future. He also says he'll be doing "pencils" for cover art.
  • Eric Trueheart: Writing. He worked on the show as a writer, scripting episodes such as "Bad, Bad Rubber Piggy" and "Hamstergeddon", as well as co-writing on several other episodes.
  • Aaron Alexovich: Writing, art. He drew the original promotional image. He was a concept artist for the original show.
  • Rikki Simons: Coloring. He was the voice of GIR and colorist for the show.
  • Moss Lawton: Inking. They are the only initial comics member who was not from the original Zim crew.[6]
  • Dave Crosland: Had worked as an artist starting from Issue 7. He was also planned to contribute a backup comic in Issue 8, though this never happened. [7] He wrote Issue 21 as a one-shot.
  • Warren Wucinich: Started working on lettering in Issue 7. Now also works in coloring and penciling. Has drawn several covers.
  • Fred C. Stressing: Coloring. He has become the main colorist since Issue 12.

There may be more as time goes on and new comics appear.

It was announced on May 15, 2015 that a "comic supplement" to the upcoming series would debut at Denver Comic-Con (May 23-25).

TruthShrieker, a conspiracy-magazine-style comic, features work by Invader Zim creator Jhonen Vasquez along with Aaron Alexovich, Eric Trueheart, Rikki Simons and Moss Lawton. It also has articles by Invader Zim antagonist Dib among other brave TruthShrieker contributors unencumbered by the public's insistence on "facts". Fans can look forward to hard-hitting journalism pieces like "Where is Invader Zim?", "Ms. Bitters Has Always Existed??", "Is This Bee Haunted?" and many more. [8]

Reception[]

Matt Little from Comic Book Resources said, "Invader Zim #1 is a welcome return and an accessible jumping on point for anyone who has heard of it or is interested to learn more. It's an all-ages affair that is entertaining for any reader, as it doesn't speak down to its audience." Marcy Cook from The Mary Sue said, "If you liked the over-the-top nonsense of the show, you're going to enjoy the comic too. The art has that loose stylised look that's very Zim, with the distinctly limited muted colour pallet."

According to statistics from Diamond Comic Distributors, the first issue of the Invader Zim comic was the 17th best-selling comic book of July 2015, with approximately 60,000 units sold at North American comic shops in that month alone.

Facts of Doom[]

  • It was stated that Dib and Gaz didn't have an official last name and "Membrane" was actually their father's first name. Yet in the "TruthShrieker" Issue 0, Dib's last name is confirmed to be "Membrane". If this is the case, it can be assumed that Gaz's last name is also Membrane.
    • This is later concreted in Issue 5 when Lord Voxelrot referred to Dib as "Dib Membrane".
    • It’s possible that Jhonen Vasquez changed his mind about Membrane being the family name just as the production of the comics started.
  • Issue 8's plot is based off of the unaired episode "When Pants Ruled!".
  • When asked about character copyrights from the TV series, colorist Fred Stressing remarked that Nickelodeon allowed all characters to be used in the comic series except for Invader Skoodge.[9] However, in the context he stated this in it is possible that he was only joking.
  • The comic staff planned to have less pigs and more Minimoose than the TV show. They also plan to say the word "doom" as little as possible.[10]
  • There were no plans to have Tak appear (yet).[11][12] However, like Skoodge, she only appeared in The Dookie Loop Horror in the Quarterly comics.
  • During the comic’s run there were plenty of mythology or world building stories, but the main focus was mainly to tell weird and funny Zim stories.[13]
  • The Invader Zim comic did not have scripted panels. During the story writing process, Jhonen Vasquez prefers to have it written in animation screenplay format (as if the animated TV cartoon was still being produced), then the screenplays are handed to the comic book artists and they can draw the panels however they want.[14]
  • The typical art style of the comics started to draw away from its first several issues, going from first trying to copy its TV series' art style into a simpler, flashier design as its normal art style. This could be due to some members of the comic crew leaving and new members joining and becoming big contributors to the art, most noticeably with the addition of Warren Wucinich.
  • The majority of issues are standalone stories. However, to date there are several cases of two-part stories (issues 1 and 2, issues 29 and 30, issues 34 and 35, issues 42 and 43) and one four-part story (issues 22 through 25).
  • Like the TV series, the comics had a very loose continuity, with several issues ending on major, seemingly permanent, events that are immediately reset by the following issues.
  • The Invader Zim Deluxe Hardcover edition is an Oni Press exclusive cover. It costs $65 and could only be purchased at Oni Press's booth at San Diego Comic Con 2017. It features a foil deboss and tip-in, and there was a limit of only 50 copies available per day.[15] It did, however, also become available on Oni Press's retail site after Comic Con ended.[16]
  • Excluding the first issue, every issue whose number ends with a 1 or a 6 is a special oneshot issue illustrated by a guest artist whose style tends to be quite different from the series' standard. This pattern was eventually broken by Issue 46, for which this isn't the case.
  • During the San Diego Comic Con 2020 Invader Zim panel, Aaron Alexovich and Eric Trueheart teased a Christmas-themed issue of the comic series which contained several short stories that deal with things such as what happened to the Santa Suit after it was shot into space, and the origin of Professor Membrane's hatred of Santa Claus.

Jhonen Vasquez revealing the amount of boxes of Invader Zim comics he currently has

The comic series gained a huge amount of mixed reception from the fandom, many praised its comeback but criticized the new art-style, ridiculous plots and lazy writing, and drastic change in characters, both design and personality.
  • Zim was the only character to appear in every issue of the comics.
  • As of February 2023, Jhonen Vasquez had revealed by his twitter that Oni Press and Nickelodeon have shipped to his house many boxes of unsold Invader Zim comics that Vasquez is trying to sell jokingly.
